Regarding “Pope Francis still has more work to do” (Letters, March 26): I read that the writer is an ex-Catholic, then he should know about church teachings and Christ’s teachings about the pope and the limitations on him.
Though the pope, as the earthly representative of Christ on Earth, can change certain things, there are things he cannot change. He can change teachings on disciplines, such as married priests, women priests, etc., or the way Mass is celebrated.
He, however, cannot change the basic doctrine given to us through the apostles and Jesus Christ himself in Holy Scripture. Prohibitions on abortion and birth control through contraception are part of the teachings of Christ and his apostles, including Paul. Since those things are such, they cannot be changed as they are doctrine and set in stone.
I recommend the following passages in the Bible to the writer for the purposes of his enlightenment: Jeremiah 1:5, in which God gives life to the baby in the womb. To block the formation of this life is contrary to his will; Mark 9:42, Amos 1:13, Deuteronomy 5:17, Psalm 127:3, Psalm 139:13-15, Psalm 22:10, Galatians 1:15, Genesis 1:28, Romans 1:32 and Didache 2:2.
