Dear Congressman Denham,
I never would have thought that since our country is besieged by numerous scandals and abuses of executive power, you could find the time to involve yourself in the affairs of the citizens of Santa Barbara County and its county government. I am referring to your co-sponsorship of House Resolution 3313. It is plainly evident that this bill – to authorize the secretary of the Interior to take land into trust for the benefit of the Santa Ynez Band of Indians – was crafted to change their land from fee to trust without having to go through the more rigorous process called for by off-reservation trust acquisition. I also know that you received $10,000 from the Santa Ynez Band of Mission Indians on Dec. 2 (Denham Victory Fund).
There are many rational and sound reasons why the citizens of Santa Ynez and Santa Barbara County are opposed to this land transfer. I am requesting that you withdraw your co-sponsorship of HR 3313 and return the $10,000 to avoid the appearance of, let’s say, any impropriety. In solidarity, the Stanislaus Republican Central Committee should also return the $4,634.89 donated to that committee on Jan. 9 by the Santa Ynez tribe.
