Regarding “Chapter 11 for Diocese” (Jan. 14, Page A1): First, the Stockton diocese is filing for bankruptcy because bishops and their staff repeatedly failed to protect children from monsters. When will the hierarchy be held accountable for their actions? Second, it’s up to the bankruptcy judge to determine which assets will be included in the settlement, so each parish will also have to expend its own funds to protect parish assets. How much of the collection plate will be going to lawyers? Finally, until the Vatican comes clean and deposes those higher-ups responsible for this evil, there will never be a “fresh start.” This is just one of the reasons I left for the Episcopal Church.
