Regarding “Sheriff should work with needle exchange” (Letters, Dec. 29), the writer seems to know more about what goes on in San Francisco than he does here in Modesto. Sheriff Adam Christianson has been fully committed to his mission of making this a safe community for all law-abiding citizens. Our local sheriff’s office and police departments work tirelessly to support the many programs that provide help for the drug abusers to whom the writer refers.
I agree with Christianson in that we need to encourage substance abusers to take advantage of available facilities and programs. Our public parks should be a safe place for our families and children. I suggest the writer of the letter offer his own backyard as a respite for the homeless and a place for needle-exchange programs. Then we’ll talk.
