Bill Jaques: Football is fun and sportsmanlike in Escalon

As an avid high school football fan, I was saddened by the events leading to cancellation of the Enochs vs. Davis game Friday evening .

Several students and parents were cheated out of a very special evening that can only happen once, and that’s your senior year in high school. Throughout football season, I travel to several different schools to see the different programs, the coaching, the offenses and defenses, and mainly the kids playing football. Some of the differences are very obvious.

I do not have a family member, or even a close friend living in Escalon, but their program is outstanding. The coaching is fantastic, the player discipline is unequaled, no showboating, seldom a penalty, much less an unsportsmanlike penalty. The parental and community support is also outstanding. During the presentation of colors and the singing of the national anthem, there is not a hat on a head, and you could hear a cotton ball drop on the playing field.

Next season, treat yourself and go to an Escalon game. We can learn a lot from that little town to our north, and I don’t even know anyone that lives there.
