According to all recent polls, citizens’ trust in government is at an all-time low. That is why I appreciate the diligent work of our City Council to make sure the money gained from Measure X is spent properly. Two examples: 1) it would take a “supermajority,” not a mere 4-3 vote, for any future council to redirect any monies from Measure X; and 2) if police and fire are unable to spend the 50 percent intended for their use – because it takes a lengthy period of time to train new personnel – that unspent money cannot be redirected. It must be saved in its proper account for future use as police and fire officers come on line. Beyond this, there is the independent citizens oversight committee.
Some would argue we can save money by cutting city salaries. Yet I am privy to the fact that some city employees have turned down significantly higher paying offers in the private sector. Why? Because they love this city and feel they have something positive to offer.
The stability Measure X will garner is going to be the tool that will encourage economic growth for our city.
