About six weeks ago, the FunStrummers were at the Ripon Farmers Market in the early evening. It was unbearable to be about a block from the railroad with the freight trains rumbling through every few minutes, both directions.
Last week as I traveled on Highway 99 north, I watched the tallest and longest train I have ever seen rumbling southbound out of Salida toward Modesto. It must have been 100 cars in length, and most cars were double-stacked with containers. I remembered my Ripon experience and suddenly thought of the courthouse planned for close proximity to the track.
I don’t think this is a good idea at all! The noise would require a lot of extra insulation. And what if, God forbid, a train happened to jump the track and crash all over Ninth Street? These things do happen.
Let’s do what’s best and put the courthouse closer to the current facility and away from the screeching and earth-shaking trains. If you wish to check out my story, just park at the Old Mill or at Gervasoni’s and listen for an hour or so.
Never miss a local story.
