Kathleen Lewis: Healthier school lunch program needed

We all want a safe environment in which to live. We are scared that we are going to die violent deaths, but the reality is we are going to die because of the way we eat. Obesity, heart disease, cancer and stroke are the leading causes of death, and they are preventable.

We all want a safe environment in which to live. We are scared that we are going to die violent deaths, but the reality is we are going to die because of the way we eat. Obesity, heart disease, cancer and stroke are the leading causes of death, and they are preventable. School-age children are going to live, on average, 10 years less than their parents, due to their diets. Most have consumed fast food since toddlerhood. We are killing ourselves.

We do need to fight crime and gangs (Measure X). We also need our children to be educated, in school, about their diets and teach them to prepare healthy foods. Healthy foods cost no more than fast food. If you know about food preparation, you can make several meals for the cost of a family’s fast-food meal. Healthy diets create healthy minds and bodies.

Let’s propose to stop the crime of providing unhealthy school meals of pizza, sloppy Joes, hot dogs, fries, etc., to our children and feed them good foods so they can live longer, healthier lives.
