Robert Shannon: Democrats don’t own the government

A Democratic operative on MSNBC compared the Republicans to a boy pestering his mother to drive her car. Mom says there is no negotiating because “I own the car.” Do the Democrats think they own the government? We the people do.

Constitutionally, the House of Representatives has the right to grant or withhold funding of any government agency. All money matters originate in the House. So President Obama does not tell the truth when he says the House is breaking the law and rules by withholding money from government operations. And breaking the law? It is Obama who has been breaking the law by releasing certain “friends” to not have to participate in Obamacare.

The House has passed all funding for every agency except the Affordable Health Care law. And they shouldn’t. This law’s funding is running over double its original budget, and it would be irresponsible to fund it as the Democrats want. A check needs to be put on this unchecked spending, and we finally have some lawmakers with the backbone to stand up to a president who has no idea of how to negotiate and hides behind Harry Reid to go around his constitutional authority.
