Republicans are accusing President Obama and the Democrats of refusing to negotiate. They are taking the stance that their demands are normal negotiating tactics. Not only are such tactics unprecedented, but if they are allowed to succeed, then hopes for effective governance are out the window.
Normalizing such tactics would mean many future disagreements would result in threats of government shutdowns and even refusal to pay our debts. Minority parties would become minority bullies. If the the public stays quiet and accepts this astounding irresponsibility, then we will get the nongovernment we deserve.
Republican leaders have shown themselves to be spineless, self-serving hacks. They have privately acknowledged that the Affordable Care Act is the law and here to stay and that shutting down the government and refusing to raise the debt limit are bad and even unacceptable actions, yet they are willing to harm all Americans and the world economy for fear of a minority within their own party. Sen. McCain has stood against such blackmail, but too few Republicans have.
