Money kills more than religion

I take exception to the statement "Religion has been the No. 1 killer since man evolved," contained in the July 23 letter "Purpose of life not found in Bible."

"A lie repeated often enough becomes the truth" is a quote from Vladimir Lenin and was utilized by Joseph Goebbels to justify the killing of the mentally retarded, Jews, the Roma, etc.

I Googled "biggest wars in history" and found only three wars were truly religious wars: the Crusades, the Thirty Years War and French wars of religion. The maximum number of people killed was 8,150,000. The wars for economic gain (territory, resources, or markets) inflicted upon humanity are the cause of a minimum of 208,200,000 deaths.

It is true that religion played a part in most wars, but it is not the cause of it. Certainly not World War II. Hitler was an agnostic or a believer in the occult. Joseph Stalin was an atheist. Together they were responsible for up to 72 million deaths.
