I had the opportunity to ride on June 14 with one of Modesto's police officers: Jon Griffith, a very fine officer who has been with the MPD for almost 13 years. He was a very professional and caring man.
There were two recent articles in The Bee, one negative and one very positive about police. The negative one said a police officer was rude; she should ride with an officer like I did. It was a great experience, and I think more citizens should see if they can ride along.
I guess I was lucky for the opportunity because of a burglary at my girlfriend's house. Officer Griffith responded, and I just asked if it would be possible. He later told me I could.
I met four or five other officers on my ride-along and they all were caring and respectful. You couldn't ask for a better bunch of officers. I also met a female lieutenant. She made a traffic stop and found drugs, so the young man was cuffed taken to jail.
I would like our citizens to give our officers a break. They are spread really thin these days and cannot be at two places at the same time. They are not patrolling to find speeders, but are focusing on drugs and gangs and burglary, and all of us should agree with this.
Crime will go down and we could live safer. Let's support our police department rather than putting them down.
