Regarding "Same illness, varying price" (May 9, Page A-1): I would like to highly recommend that everyone read the 28-page, in-depth Time Magazine Special Report from March 4, written by Steven Brill. It is titled, "Why Medical Bills Are Killing Us," and it goes far beyond the varying price problem, including the facts and figures on why nonprofit hospitals are much more profitable than for-profit hospitals.
It also tells me why Tenet, which bought Emanuel, is scurrying to set up nonprofit entities like EMC Health and Jessica's House, and Legacy Health Endowment, "a religious, not-for-profit foundation." Tenet is definitely for profit, and needs a place to hide it. But that's just my opinion. Google "Steven Brill" and get his.
