In reference to the possibility of an explosion such as in West, Texas, happening here, the Modesto Regional Fire Authority interim chief stated: "I think our past history of not having these kinds of events are a pretty good indicator of the safety record of industry in our county. We just haven't seen a lot of things like this."
This kind of thinking is not only ignorant but also scary coming from a fire chief. I hope no one in London of similar status is thinking like "We've never had any trouble with our previous marathons as happened in Boston, so I believe we're safe."
Later in the same article is a description of an ethanol plant situated right along Highway 99 that uses highly flammable chemicals. I guess we're safe because it's never had a problem. Shoot, maybe I can stop wearing my seat belt since I've never been in a car accident and I drive safely.
