In response to "$168 fine for driving impaired" (Sept. 30, Letters): California Vehicle Code section 23153 states "(a) It is unlawful for any person, while under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle and concurrently do any act forbidden by law, or neglect any duty imposed by law in driving the vehicle, which act or neglect proximately causes bodily injury to any person other than the driver."
The vehicle code makes no distinction between prescription drugs and the illegal variety. Persons driving under the influence of prescription drugs can and have been prosecuted. Look at that prescription for pain killer you have in your medicine cabinet. Does the label not warn you that it will make you drowsy and operating machinery or driving a motor vehicle is dangerous?
