It is most ingenuous of the letter writer ("Mexican flag flying ticks me off," May 11) to reason that flying one's national flag is equivalent to collecting food stamps and welfare. He must at once, if not tout de suite, alert all other ethnic groups on the West Side not to fly their national flags of origin during their religious and patriotic festivities because, according to the writer, they will be dipping from the public dole.
It is with much chagrin that I acknowledge this man's academic laurels by his suggestion that Cinco de Mayo is an Independence Day. Schoolchildren know better! We need to make people aware how much is spent on the public dole to people and in farm subsidies.
