In regards to the letter ("Denounce the war in Modesto," May 5) asking when the police were going to make Modesto safer. It's not all up to the police to make our town safer; we have to work on it, as well.
We do not depend on the system to feed or clothe us, do we? We do things on our own. If we wait for the police to do it, we have lost. They have bigger fish to fry, so we have to do our part to help them. We must take back our town from the thugs, crooks and gangbangers. It will not be easy, it will not be clean, but it can be done.
What we need is more people to stand up to the punks who would prey on the weak and the helpless. What we need are laws making it easier to carry a concealed weapon. Make them think twice about whom they plan on stealing from. Once a few of them are taken out by honest citizens, you will see the drop in crimes.
The only thing these thugs recognize is violence, so let's show them that we can take our town back -- by force if necessary; deadly if need be.
