Board of Supervisors candidate Vito Chiesa recently sent out a mailer which refers to Les Weidman as a "career politician." This is sheer nonsense. Weidman is a career law enforcement officer. He has been shot at in the line of duty. He has participated in hundreds of arrests. I know. I served with him for 26 years in the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department.
He has run for one political office prior to this supervisorial race: Sheriff of Stanislaus County, an extension of his career. After retiring, he was appointed the law enforcement liaison to the governor. A "career politician" would have used this to advance his political career. Les didn't, but came home to his family and community.
I don't know Chiesa well, but I believe him to be an honorable, respected member of his community. This makes me wonder if the words "career politician" are his or those of a paid political consultant -- who, incidentally, would be a "career politician." To debate issues or ideas should be the focus of this race, not ridiculous statements that are neither true nor relevant.
