I'm sure you've seen them all over the streets of Modesto, as well as on nearby highways: burnt rubber marks. The vast majority of these marks are not being made by drivers slamming on the brakes to avoid an accident, but by drivers who are deliberately leaving their marks. I'm getting tired of people making their marks in this way; they deface our streets and, by extension, our neighborhoods.
I'm sure the people having their jollies in this way enjoy looking at their handiwork, or tirework. I also believe that their reasons for doing it run much deeper than even they realize. At a deeper level, everyone wants to leave his or her mark in this world. In a pathetic way, that's what these people are doing.
What can you and I do about it? First, the next time you see or hear a deliberate burning of rubber, get out there with a piece of paper and pencil. Even if you are unable to get a license plate number or description of the vehicle, the driver won't know that. Second, be thinking of ways you can leave your mark in our community -- in a positive, constructive manner.
Never miss a local story.
