I have lived in Manteca most of my life, and have watched the drug culture take hold. Now, people call for its legalization. But there is a cost of drugs we don't hear much about.
I own a rental outside of Manteca. While it was vacant, some desperate drug user decided it was a great place to strip all the wire from the walls, ceiling and under the structure. He took ceiling and wall fixtures and busted holes in the walls and floors. He took the shower sliders, the stove and even the kitchen sink. He took the air conditioner and the well pump and busted out a window. He destroyed new kitchen cabinets, hall cabinets, entry doors and anything else he couldn't sell.
The druggie probably got $500. My losses are about $150,000 and another $10,000 to clear the lot because the home is beyond repair. But the loss goes beyond that. It was a rental for a family to live in. It was advertising for local papers; a source of income for local business where I bought materials; for people I hired to install them. Its taxes lowered your tax burden. And the lost rental fees won't go to charities, homeless, and other people we have helped over the years. Now it will be demolished, thanks to drugs.
