Best Friends shelter is not in Kanab, Utah, but is 10 miles north ("An example of a no-kill shelter," March 29, Letters). We traveled to Utah to visit and spent most of the day and received the VIP tour. I have donated to animal rights groups; Best Friends was one of the larger recipients.
About four years ago, we moved from the Bay Area to Riverbank. At the old house, I had adopted an abandoned cat. After feeding him for a while, he became friendly. He even brought me presents -- a mouse or bird. When it came time to move, I did not feel he would be able to adjust to the new location. I thought of Best Friends and called to ask if he could have a safe place to live. We offered to pay the airfare and anything else. They told me there was no room for an old stray. We asked the neighbors to try to take care of him; it didn't work, and it still hurts. Thank you, Best Friends.
