I was enraged when I read "Former deputy accepts plea deal" (March 21, Page A-1). Michael Galvan pleaded no contest to assault under the color of authority and embezzlement. To make it worse, Chief Deputy District Attorney Dave Harris "dropped the most serious charge Galvan faced -- of rape with threat of use of authority -- as well as misappropriation of public money and possession of a dangerous weapon." If the most serious charges were dropped, what was left for a plea deal?
As crime continues to rise in our community, who are we to count on to enforce our laws and to come to our aid if we are crime victims? If our peace officers are not made to pay for crimes against the people they have sworn to serve and protect, no one will be safe.
