After listening to Barack Obama's speech, I offer some thoughts: The Federal Reserve relieved Bear Stearns of its bad debts to forestall imminent bankruptcy. The cost of this bailout ($30 billion) will come at taxpayers' expense and benefit mostly white shareholders. Contrast this against the people of New Orleans two years after Hurricane Katrina and still waiting for help.
The continuous loop of Rev. Jeremiah Wright spewing forth with his indignation is repeated over and over on conservative talk radio to fan the flames of white distrust of Obama and the black community at large. Slavery is a distant past, but racial hatred, discrimination and inequality still haunt us all. Obama's speech lays the groundwork for self-examination and eventually healing. We should all examine his words whether or not we intend to vote for him. Whether he wins or not, God bless him for saying them.
