I think it is time take out all of the euphemisms regarding the West Park development. Let's start using logic and calling it what it really is: megadump, container city, train town and pollution valley.
Some have called it a vision, an idea before its time, a job creator. Judging by the neighborhood surrounding the Port of Oakland, I think most would disagree. That neighborhood has high rates of asthma and other health problems among residents or workers associated with diesel particulate matter from port activities as well as from nonport-related trucks and buses (San Francisco Chronicle, March 18).
The proposed plan would bring these concerns and many others that we cannot afford here on the West Side.
Supervisors, you have an opportunity to develop something special in Crows Landing. Let's hope you have the vision not to create the megadump in container city. The people of the future pollution valley will thank you!
