As a retiree who has worked hard all my life to earn a living for my family and myself, I was dismayed to learn that Sen. John McCain has called for the privatization of Social Security.
Let's remember that one of every six Americans relies on Social Security. It
has been the most effective anti-poverty program ever created.
In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, McCain said he shares the viewpoint of President Bush -- that Social Security is just another commodity that can be sold off to their friends on Wall Street.
Just as I would not dishonor McCain for his military service and heroism, I would not have retired workers who built this economy be dishonored and tossed aside after a life of productive work. Under the Bush-McCain scheme, our Social Security benefits would be thrown to the whims of the stock market. We get all the risk, but Wall Street gets all the reward. At a time of rising health care costs and economic uncertainty, this is no time to put our Social Security in the hands of John McCain.
