To fellow supporters of the Iraq war: Did you notice that several weeks ago Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and President Jalal Talabani received the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, for a formal state visit? They even rolled out the red carpet in Baghdad for this thorn in our side who reportedly supplies the insurgents.
What an ingrate al-Maliki is, after all we've done for him. The two leaders are planning to sign economic and security agreements. The cause of this unpleasant turn of events is obvious: We're not pouring enough resources into Iraq. Hopefully, we'll elect John McCain in November, and be assured of at least four more years of unrelenting "investment" there. We can always further cut spending on our schools, infrastructure and health care for at least that long. In the meantime, to show individual support, we could send those tax rebate checks we're getting in May direct to the al-Maliki government.
