The governor's budget proposal calls for unprecedented cuts to kindergarten through 12th-grade students and schools by reducing Proposition 98 funding by $400 million this year and suspending Proposition 98 for 2008-2009.
Proposition 98 was approved by the voters and guaranteed minimum funding for education. Our students and schools did not create this budget problem, and their educational progress shouldn't be undermined because of it. The budget reductions would be disastrous to public schools and are inconsistent with the state's goal of improving student achievement.
The Empire District (which has five elementary and two middle schools in east Modesto and Empire) will be making the difficult decision to cut almost $2.8 million in personnel and services. Severe cuts have already been made in recent years due to declining enrollment. Our community must unite to protect this funding for the success of our students. We urge our local legislators to protect our children and our future. Please contact our legislators to voice opposition to these cuts on behalf of our students.
Never miss a local story.
