An interesting TV commercial has been airing featuring a man and a woman worrying about what phone company to use. But wait! Help is on the way for people too stupid to handle this on their own: an 800 number to call for free advice.
Did I say "free"? Turns out this "free" service is provided by the state Public Utilities Commission courtesy of a nation of overburdened taxpayers. You and I are paying for this "free" advice, as well as for producing and airing the ads, at a time when our infrastructure is crumbling, we can't afford enough firefighters, teachers are being laid off and most of us can barely afford to fill our gas tanks.
Our lawmakers, facing a staggering budget deficit, have managed to vote themselves pay increases year after year, and they continue to find ever more frivolous ways to spend our money. They can't balance the budget but propose to hire more than 200 new Franchise Tax Board employees to squeeze every last nickel out of us.
Big government just grows bigger and more arrogant. Maybe it's time for a second American Revolution.
Never miss a local story.
