As a liberal who respected and admired the wit, wordsmanship and erudition of William F. Buckley Jr., I believe he warranted the acclaim showered on him following his death. He was a critic and visionary on the side of the angels, wanting to make life in the United States better by replacing the liberals in government, especially the courts, with hard-line Republicans.
Now is a good time to take stock on what he and the Republican revolution have wrought. We must never forget Watergate, Iran-Contra and the long string of convictions of members of those administrations, followed by the corrupt Bush-Cheney administration.
Add these events since 2000: The reduction of intelligent political discourse to the current depths of vulgar, vitriolic and hateful utterances whereby "liberal" has become a dirty word. The deaths and destruction in Iraq and Afghanistan now costing billions of dollars, estimated to climb to a trillion or more dollars to rebuild those nations and the broken bodies and minds of our surviving troops. Throw in the loss of U.S. standing in the world.
May Mr. Buckley rest in peace; the liberals are coming to the rescue in November.
