Many people, including many here in the valley, are in denial that our economy is unraveling. Oil is skyrocketing in price, causing all of our daily food staples that are transported to rise as well. For example, gone are eggs for 89 cents a dozen. I just saw eggs at a low-end grocery store for $2.38. No wonder burglaries are up 26 percent in Modesto. I'm sure many of these new burglars would rather work for their money, but work where? The area is steadily losing living-wage jobs like Valley Fresh, Lactalis, Hershey and the Riverbank call center. I feel like I'm living in a Third World country. Meanwhile, I have seen reports saying the cost of fuel and groceries will continue to rise.
We need to wake up from our complacency, hold our government accountable and demand solutions.
