Thank you to Jeff Jardine for the column "Scam artists avoid jail time, enjoy 'custody' " (Feb. 28, Page B-1). Where is the public outcry? I am so angry at a system that would allow Lonni Ashlock and Ronald Buhler the same freedoms the good citizens of this community enjoy. What happened to time out?
If we cannot afford to incarcerate scum who prey on our weak and our elderly citizens, then why not put them to work? All over Modesto, I see weeds that need to be pulled, trash that needs to be picked up, meals that could be served, toilets that need to be cleaned at county facilities, etc. They can wear highly visible orange jumpsuits and their ankle bracelets while performing these and other community services.
Why can Ashlock and Buhler still afford $2,400 for ankle bracelets, not to mention movies and dinner out, when they have 19 and 20 families respectively waiting for restitution? What are the victim families doing for entertainment these days?
