A lieutenant and two patrol deputies with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department, two officers with the Los Banos Police Department, two deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, a correctional officer for the state and a railroad employee. What do these individuals have in common? They are all Iraq war veterans, having returned from combat duty in January 2006 with Delta Company 1-184 Infantry. Hardly the homeless, suicidal, violent, mentally or physically challenged individuals that were hatefully portrayed in the letter "Berkeley just protecting its kids" (Feb. 22, Page B-6). There are many other Iraq war veterans in our community who are respectable, hardworking individuals. The letter-writer owes them all an apology.
