For some time now I have wondered about the position of The Bee on issues involving illegal immigration. The Bee was a bit too willing to print such letters as "Easy fiscal fix: Stop aid to illegal immigrants" (Feb. 27). I understand that printing such letters is the responsibility of a free press, but I also believe that it is the responsibility of reputable newspapers to challenge and correct information presented as fact when it is not.
Imagine my pleasant surprise, therefore, when I found Dan Walters' excellent column "New studies on immigrants dispel hysteria" printed on the facing page to the letter mentioned above. Finally, a factual, researched response to the unchecked, erroneous and harmful statements of many letter writers. Thank you very much, Modesto Bee and Dan Walters.
