Making Dumpster diving illegal wastes our time and money, and it further wastes what many people consider trash. We can solve urban blight and fight theft and still offer our garbage up to those who need it. Would we rather clean up a little around our bin or live on the street? Would we rather shred some paper or depend on recycling for our livelihood?
The problem is deeper than just trash and theft, but if we won't help people in a broad sense, we shouldn't deny them in this very narrow one.
We are the most wasteful society on Earth, and these are people who value our garbage. When we throw out half a pizza, we might be feeding a family. We throw out recyclables that people recycle for cash -- cash they often need. Dumpster diving might even be considered an industry. These are jobs for some where no other jobs are offered.
