May I join Mark Vasché and C.V. Allen (Dec. 23 and 28 columns), with my own wish list for our country?
Besides openness from Washington, I'd like to see: an end to corruption in government; intelligent leaders who really know how to lead; a government that works hard to help establish peace on Earth and worries more about its people's welfare than meddling in other countries' affairs; a government that really cares about our children, the elderly, the homeless and working people; education and the environment. Government officials without ties to big corporations. Government officials that aren't elected because of how much money they have or can raise, but based on experience, honesty and integrity.
Just as in the private sector, we need to "hire" the best people for these jobs, from the president down, hold them accountable and get rid of those who don't measure up, not reward them with raises and re-election whether they deserve them or not. Here's hoping our wishes become a reality someday.
