In response to "Lifeless movie attacks religion" (Dec. 27, Letters): "The Golden Compass" is a great movie! The independent thought and determination of the main character really came through. It is refreshing to see a fantasy movie come out where a child can watch a character who desires to think for herself and investigate outside the norm. Young minds need stories that empower and question the "do as the Romans do" thought process.
Not everyone is Christian or religious in any way, so the story line need not focus or contain these traits to make a great movie. And last but not least, stories for children do not always need to end happily. I would encourage people to take their young daughters to see "The Golden Compass" to encourage determination and the ability to overcome adversity.
