I am a member of the Modesto Junior College Community Concert Band, which numbers 70 musicians. Our fall concert is scheduled Nov. 28. The elaborate brochures proclaiming our wonderful programs offered at the new Gallo Center for the Arts included our performance and those of the MJC Community Concert Orchestra and the student band. We were thrilled, looking forward to the opportunity to perform there. Our disappointment was palpable when, at our rehearsal on Nov. 7, we were told that we would not be allowed to perform in the new center because the administrators of the Gallo Center and the Yosemite Community College District, after more than six months of negotiations, were unable to agree on liability issues. Are other community organizations facing such issues? Are other community organizations accepting risks not in their contracts? Is there discrimination?
Our concert will be held at Downey High School at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 28, under the baton of Eric Maki. Come! It will be a good one!
