I was really disturbed about your front page story on the financial shape of the YMCA ("YMCA in poor health," Nov. 4). There two ways to get any enterprise out of financial trouble: Increase revenue or lower operating expenses.
I propose that MID and PG&E give the YMCA a huge break or eliminate monthly charges completely. The Y must keep the pool warm to help older folks and others to use the pool to get or remain in good health. The entire facility must be fairly comfortable indoors so the facilities can be used year around.
The Y's MID and PG&E bills must be through the roof.
Our community must have this facility; if we can support a new performing arts center, we should be able to keep the Y viable to serve not-so-affluent residents.
Never miss a local story.
Also, I'd like the YMCA to offer its facilities for overnight shelters to homeless families or other nonaddicted people. I think the community can donate unused cots, sleeping bags, etc. to help these people. There are not enough shelters for all of Modesto down-and- outers. The showers could also be of good use.
If such a program can be realized, I'd be happy to coordinate the effort.
