Who is to blame for the debacle in Iraq? I think a good starting point would be for each of us to look in the mirror. Did any of us question the rightness of initiating this conflict? No, we blindly accepted the assertions of our leaders and the CIA.
The CIA gave us the Bay of Pigs disaster, the Glomar Explorer boondoggle, the Shah of Iran catastrophe and now the WMD analysis that propelled us in the morass of Iraq. Why didn't we citizens question the CIA conclusions and communicate our concern to our elected representatives? Why didn't the free press carry out its paramount duty and responsibility to prevent any part of the government from deceiving the people (Hugo Black)? In the words of Walt Kelley's cartoon sage of the Okeefenokee Swamp, Pogo Possum, "We have met the enemy and it is us."
