There is a disturbing move afoot to change the name of Castle Air Base. Merced County would like a more recognizable name. On Dec. 24, 1944, more than 2,000 bombers and 800 fighters took off over Germany. They were led by Brig. Gen. Frederick Castle. My father was the pilot of one of these bombers. He was 23.
My dad lost two engines to German fighters, and Castle lost his life. There are thousands of stories like this. All you have to do is sit in on a memorial candle- lighting ceremony and look into the faces of our veterans. You will see why we must always honor their great sacrifice to our country. Veterans Day is upon us and we owe these brave men our respect and gratitude. Please do not forget what they did for our country. Please do not change the name of Castle Air Base.
