In response to "Bee smears Ceres police," (Oct. 24, Letters): This is regarding the Latino college students who filed a complaint charging Ceres police with using excessive force. One of the students is studying to be a probation officer. Another individual is in the U.S. military, serving in Iraq, and has several family members who are police officers, yet this writer refers to them as scumbags. Does she mean any citizen that complains against an officer is a scumbag, or just Latinos?
The lack of trust of police officers by many citizens, especially minorities, is nothing new. State prisons have a significant number of ex-cops convicted of falsifying reports, among other crimes; so sorry, the pedestal and sympathy are out. I'm not knocking all police officers because I have met and dealt with some outstanding professional, down-to-earth individuals who know how to treat people. Besides destroying the professional image and community communication, bad cops are a big liability. Also, my hat's off to the NAACP for stepping in to assist as needed.
