I know people love to shop, but I don't get a rush from shopping at Wal-Mart. Besides, the negative reports about Wal-Mart from around the world weren't publicized when the first store opened in Ceres. We have wised up to Wal-Mart.
On the other hand, I feel uplifted seeing many wonderful local businesses and chain stores establish roots in Ceres. Furthermore, when I see new homes, new fire stations, new parks, and projects like the refurbished Whitmore House, the new Ceres Community Center and the revitalization of downtown Ceres, I get a sense of satisfaction, and the sense that the community is doing well. (I have worked in Ceres for years.)
A second Wal-Mart shouldn't be built, nor should the corporation be allowed to abandon the existing store just for the sake of building a new store. Until Wal-Mart changes its business practices, I see no need to promote it.
Ceres should look after its civic needs and its citizens' needs for better-paying jobs. Building a gateway to Ceres, something distinctive and different and profitable, should be accomplished without a Wal-Mart Supercenter.
