I found the article "Study: Minimum wage doesn't cut it" (Oct. 17, Page A-12) very informative and I thank you for publishing it. The California Budget Project report missed one other very high cost, in addition to housing and health care -- taxes. Most of us don't stop to consider how much we pay in taxes and I didn't have a feel for it until after becoming self-employed. In 2003, I took time to estimate my total tax liability for the previous year, including income, self-employment, property, sales and gas taxes, and discovered that I had worked for the government for over seven months in 2002. Clearly, taxes rank very high among the financial burdens of citizens in this state.
