In March 2001, Pastor Curt Pernice stood before the Ripon City Council and said he had most of the materials and labor donated to complete the final phase of our skate park expansion. He said the cost to the city would be very little.
In July 2007, Pernice said the city that had broken its promise by not completing the expansion at a cost of $400,000. As a council member in 2006, he pushed through an additional expenditure of $9,500 for a new design, though records indicate we already had a design. That's $409,500 of taxpayer money for a park he said he was going to build six years ago at little cost to the city.
In July 2007, Pernice was asked if he had committed to raising any funds for the expansion. He said he couldn't remember. On Aug. 7, I presented the entire council with the minutes of the March 2001 meeting. The response: Silence.
Pernice is still mayor. Scarier than that, there are not three votes on that council to hold him accountable for his actions and inactions. Thus are the accepted behaviors of the Ripon council.
