As a mother of two elementary school-age kids, I found the series "A breach of trust" (Oct. 21-23, Page A-1) horrifying. It seems that we are protecting the criminals that are abusing our children rather than protecting our innocent children. The abusers that are caught seem to have numerous incidents of sexual misconduct. This sickens me. The future of our children is in the hands of the lawmakers who need to protect children, not criminals.
I was happy to read that some states are using a more thorough background investigation before hiring teachers. Maybe a psych test should also be used for screening. In this age of computers, there should be a national databank mandatory for all educators and their history. That way a criminal could not move from one jurisdiction to another and commit the same offense.
