I work at Downey High School and absolutely love my job. I have been doing this job for three years. Something that really bothers me is how the students are not interested in saluting the flag. They stumble out of their chairs at the last possible second, no hands on their hearts, and not one of them in my classroom says the words. The adults in the room (six of us) all say the pledge.
One day I was having a conversation with my son, a young officer who will be serving in the Army for at least the next eight years. I told him how it really bothers me that he is willing to put his own life in jeopardy for people who don't appreciate what he is doing. He told me, "Mom, don't worry about those people. That is exactly why I do what I do, so they can continue to enjoy the freedom to choose." I thought that was a beautiful comment. It makes me respect him and all the men and women who have served or are now serving in the military. Thank you all for your selfless service.
