The Project Citizen Task Force at Empire Elementary School is part of a national curriculum to instruct students on the policy-making process. With Sen. Jeff Denham's endorsement and a grant from the Latino Business Association to pay for expenses, students were invited to Sacramento, where Denham spoke to them about the legislative process and introduced them from the Senate floor.
This was of enormous importance to the students, many of whom come from disadvantaged circumstances which isolate them from positive experiences such as a visit to the Capitol.
Task force members identified a problem of food waste on their campus and developed a resolution which was presented to the Empire Union School District Board of Trustees on a recycling plan that includes student participation. Their plan was chosen for competition at a statewide event where they received outstanding reviews.
