Ballot-box planning is a recipe for disaster. This initiative stuff is really interesting. Measure E proposes to put a majority of decisions about county land use on the ballot. Will we vote on every 10-acre project that comes forward? Never mind that my mailbox is already cluttered with election propaganda. Yet we have a population that only mustered a 25 percent voter turnout in the last gubernatorial election.
Casting important decisions off to an apathetic electorate where developers are making campaign promises they will never keep seems like a recipe for disaster. We should let county staff and supervisors make informed decisions for us instead of hoping Mrs. Jones isn't persuaded by campaign literature to vote for something she shouldn't.
