Re “Trump’s generals too valuable to be dismissed” (Page 3B, March 4): The media, claims Victor Davis Hanson, is schizophrenic in their adverse coverage of three generals, John Kelly, H.R. McMaster and Jim Mattis. Prof. Hanson evidently gets his news from Fox News, as the papers I read list those generals as the sane members of Trump’s administration.
Hanson blames the previous administration for a “failed Russian reset,” whatever that means. Obama was to blame for an “unchecked Chinese ascendance,” as if anyone could block a nation of 1.3 billion people when that nation has a thriving economy and massive resources.
The claim that Trump’s poll numbers are improving is ludicrous. Hanson is right that there is chaos in the White House. Generals Kelly, McMaster and Mattis might be able to calm the waters, but they are not able to stem the incoming tide.
I admit that I don’t know who Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord is, and I do not intend to look him up to find his purported quip, reversed or otherwise.
