I often hear something from those uncertain about the danger of our significant greenhouse gas emissions. They, in honest uncertainty, see that temperatures have cycled up and down before humans were around. So how do we know it’s a problem now? If so, is it human caused?
We do know. Concentrations of carbon dioxide are now higher than at any time in human history – with the excess having an isotope concentration similar to that of the fossil fuels that we’ve mined. To restate: never in human history have CO2 concentrations been as high as today, and there’s no question where the excess comes from – us. Research does more than just suggest that global average temperatures follow CO2 concentrations – it’s confirmed over and over again.
So given that CO2 has shot up to never ever before seen amounts, what can we expect temperatures to do. Yep, shoot up to never ever before seen heights. California is doing the right thing in its aggressive approach to reducing greenhouses gases. I’m proud of that.
